Birth Story Part 1- Before the hospital

Most of you probably already know that miss Allie made her debut on December 21, 2011. I wanted to write out her birth story so I would always have it so fair warning that this will be LONG so I decided to write it in parts. With my new born writing the whole thing at once will just be too hard. So here is part one:)

On Tuesday, Dec 20 at 10am I woke up with a simi painful contraction similar to what Id been feeling on and off for a few days. At first I didnt think much of it but when I had another one less than 10 minutes later I thought we might be on to something. R called me to see if I wanted to go out to lunch with him and I told him yes but that we needed something light because I "might" be in labor. He was mentally where I was, excited but doubtful that this was the real thing. We went to the bowling ally on base and I had a BLT and some milk. While we were there I continued to have the simi painful contractions and we both got very excited because they hadnt been consistent like this before. Once we got home (TMI here) I had some diarrhea which is a well known sign of labor. That's when I really got excited (weird I know).

I decided to do what my friend Brittany did when she was in early labor and went home took a bath and got myself nice and ready. I figured it might be the last shower I had for a few days. The contractions slowed while I was in the tub but picked back up while I was doing my hair. Still nothing really painful and nothing consistent. After I got ready I started to clean the house and get our things together. There was a lot to be done still and since I felt up to it I figured now was the time. At some point in the middle of all that I also decided to go for a walk to see if I could get things going faster.

Around 2 I called R and told him it was time for him to come home from work because I had a Chiropractors appointment at 3 which I fully intended on making, whether I was in labor or not, because if it WAS the day being fully aligned was only going to make it go quicker and easier.

After Dr B adjusted me (and agreed that he thought I was in labor) the contractions really started to pick up. Whatever he adjusted really pushed things along! R and I wanted to run to the grocery store to pick up a few last minute items to have the house stocked in case our parents ended up staying there for the week. While at the store the contractions got much more intense and became harder to walk through. STILL not anything too bad at all so I still figured I had a while to go. R was freaking out trying to leave the store because he could tell things were progressing but I kept insisting we get everything we had come for.

We finally got back home and decided to go on another walk together. At this point the contractions were more painful, but still not consistent. They were anywhere from 3 minutes to 10 minutes apart and anywhere in between. This really made me think I had forever to go still. We went back home and R made me another sandwich and sliced pineapple which I made sure to eat. I wasnt super hungry and had to push myself to finish the other half. Around this time I decided to sit down at the computer and distract myself for a while, but eventually the contractions were really painful to handle sitting down so I moved to the bed room and laid down. R brought me water and rushed to pack our bags because we FINALLY realized this wasnt going to stop and we were having a baby. I called my parents (whod been on alert all day) and told them to go ahead and make the 2 hour trip to my town so they could be with us for the delivery.

I labored in bed for a couple of hours and every once in a while would have a contraction bad enough and would call for Ryan to rub my back, but other than that I did the text book Bradley "relaxation technique" where I just focused on my breathing and trying to keep all my muscles lose. I kept telling myself the more relaxed I was the quicker I could meet my baby. R and I started to debate on when we should go to the hospital. He really thought I was in way early labor still because he expected me to act like I was in more pain. I WAS in pain I just wasnt showing it. I wasnt sure either though because I expected things would get MUCH worse and I was still handling the contractions pretty well, especially when my back was rubbed.

Laboring in my bed:

After I had one contraction when I literally felt like my uterus was burning I told R we shouldnt really wait longer because I was pretty sure that feeling meant we were getting closer. We still werent 100% sure we should go though because we didnt want to go home only being a few CM dilated. We decided to go anyhow and just leave if I wasnt at least 5cm dilated. The ride to the hospital was a bit painful when we hit the only 2 speed bumps on the way to the hospital in the peak of my contraction (and remember, sitting up made them much worse). We walked in to the hospital and SLOWLY got admitted. The rest will be saved for part 2!
